I’m a little bit of a romantic at heart and I’m always on the lookout for incredibly romantic things to do with the boyfriend on weekends, anniversaries and other special occasions (read: I’m always looking for romantic ideas and then shamelessly dropping hints to the boyfriend to arrange said romantic activity). One of my most-favourite romantic things to do is catch a classic movie with my special someone – there’s nothing like cuddling up under a blanket, munching on popcorn and reminiscing about how they don’t make movies like they used to. Which is why I was super excited to discover the awesomeness that is Galileo Open-Air Cinema – because what is more romantic than watching a classic movie under the stars?

Set against spectacular backdrops in Cape Town, The Galileo Open-Air Cinema allows Capetonians to catch classic movies and documentaries under a ceiling of stars. You can expect them to screen classics like Rocky, Top Gun, The Notebook, Fight Club, Back To The Future and more. The great news is, the cinema also has three locations in the city including Hillcrest Quarry in Durbanville (Tuesdays), Kirstenbosch Gardens in Newlands (Wednesdays) and the V&A Waterfront (Thursdays) so there’s no excuse about their events not being close enough to home! The screenings also only take place from November until the end of April so there’s little chance of being rained out or freezing to death while you watch.

The boyfriend and I went through to a screening of The Goonies at Kirstenbosch a few weeks and I absolutely adored the whole experience. The doors opened at 18:00 and the movie started just after sunset so we could get a clear picture on the giant inflatable movie screen. I also loved the fact that before the movie starts food vendors add a bit of a market-feel to the event by sell everything from Paella, Nachos and steak sandwiches to popcorn, smoothies and coffee. If you’re all about the no-fuss option then you can grab a delicious bite to eat here before the show, or, if you are determined to be more romantic than that then you’ll be happy to hear that they also allow you to bring your own picnic baskets and drinks into the cinema area.

As for seating, we took our own picnic blankets to the screening but they also offer chairs and blankets to rent for as little as R10. If lying down while you watch a movie isn’t your thing then the chairs are a great option as they make it a lot more comfortable. Something else to look out for while you’re waiting for the movie to start is the roaming photo booth with props – photographers roam around the event before the screening, capturing candid shots of movie goers and then share these on their Facebook page.

The Galileo screenings take place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at the various venues and tickets will set you back R70 per person, R79 for a ticket plus a blanket, R88 for a ticket plus a chair and R95 for an entry plus a chair and a blanket (prices valid for online purchases only). The screening schedule on their website is also updated quite regularly so make sure you check in to see what is showing in your area.
