I must say that I will never regret having two daughters. Although many people have told me that it is nice having a pigeon-pair, I wouldn't change my family for the world. And although our household is often infused with hormones, drama and long silences (preceded by slamming doors), there is a lot of love and harmony too. One of the other reasons I love having girls is all the girly stuff I get to buy; nothing gives me a bigger thrill than shopping for birthdays or Christmas, or happening upon a cutesy item that only girls will truly appreciate. So imagine my delight when I came upon Gem'ery (thanks to a friend on Facebook) - a local small business that will have you squealing right along with me.

What started out as a hobby for Debbie, owner and purveyor of all things pretty, has turned into a thriving little business. And her business works because Debbie only sources stuff that appeals to her taste. Luckily loads of other people love what she buys too, and because Debbie operates from her home (and therefore doesn't have any overheads like rent), she can keep her prices low - bonus for all of us! Items that caught my eye included an extensive selection of Washi Tape (R17 per roll), quirky Sandwich Cutters (R5), gorgeous Cellphone Cases (R80) and Cupcake Sets (R25). Smaller items like Pencils (R5 each) and Stamp Sets (R50) can be added to cute Transparent Bags (R45), along with a couple of other items to make up a gift, or party-pack with a difference.

I also really liked the Cooler Blocks for school lunch boxes during warmer weather (R15), and the Wire Shelf that easily slides into a cupboard and is great for storing smaller items (R45). I was very impressed with the pricing of the multi-coloured twine (great for gift wrapping) at R40 for 100 metres, and regretted the fact that I didn't buy each of my girls a Leather Sling Bag, available in a variety of colours and perfect for storing a cellphone, cash and some lipstick (R100). Debbie also offers a design-your-own bunting service; all you need to do is decide on your preferred length, select the material and Debbie will put it all together for you at R10 per flag.

Gem'ery is always advertising new stock so make sure you keep an eye on their Facebook page - it's the best way to keep track of items on offer. But be warned: Gem'ery sells stock like hotcakes so get in there early! Just this week I spotted funky Loom Elastic bangles up for grabs which I have no doubt the kids would have loved. Debbie also arranges two markets per year (Spring and Christmas) where she showcases her own as well as other supplier's offerings. Details of these markets will no doubt be released closer to the time.
